Decks that do justice to the house
Harrogate has some of the finest houses in the north: Victorian stone villas in the Duchy, Edwardian homes around Oatlands and the Stray, and substantial modern houses in Pannal and Killinghall. A deck behind a house like that has to be just as well made. The boards, the colour, the balustrade and the way the deck meets the stone all matter.
We start every project with a design visit. We look at how the light falls, how the garden slopes, where you'd sit in the evening and how the deck will look from inside. Then we draw it up and give you a clear, itemised quote.
Composite, done properly
Most of our Harrogate customers choose premium capped composite. It doesn't rot or splinter, needs no staining or oiling, and holds its colour. Natural stone-grey, warm taupe and rich brown tones sit comfortably against honey-coloured gritstone, and you get a clean, uniform finish with hidden fixings and mitred borders. Read about composite decking.
For some homes, nothing beats hardwood, and we build in that too.

Conservation areas and planning
Much of central Harrogate and Knaresborough is in conservation areas, and there are many listed buildings. Low decks are usually straightforward, but raised decks need planning permission and listed homes need extra care. We'll talk it through at the visit, and North Yorkshire Council can confirm the position for your property.
Questions people ask
Do I need planning permission for a deck in Harrogate?
Usually not for a low deck. Decking is normally permitted development if no part is more than 30cm above the ground and, with any outbuildings, it covers no more than half the garden. Raised decks and listed buildings are different, so check with North Yorkshire Council if you're unsure.
Will composite look right with a stone house?
Yes, in the right colour. Warm greys and taupes pick up the tones of Yorkshire stone. We bring samples so you can see them against your walls.
